For the uninitiated, John Zorn is an avant-garde jazz composer and saxophone player. Zorn has a number of groups or projects that he works with and through, each with a unique style and sound of their own. The Dreamers series has been described by critics as the "pleasantly dark" side of Zorn's repertoire and features touches of surf guitar, Latin influence, and electronica.
Zorn's only previous Christmas recording was "Blues Noel", which he recorded for the out-of-print 1987 French collection "Joyeux Noel". It was later included in Zorn's own "Godard/Spillane" collection. "Blues Noel" is done in what is known as the "file card" technique--where separate musical sections are written on file cards, recorded individually, and then the sections are joined in unexpected and sometimes jarring ways. The first time one of my friends listened to "Blues Noel", he thought his stereo was broken. Me, I've always dug it for some reason, probably because of its "jazz noir" aspects. "A Dreamers Christmas" promises to be nothing like that, however. "Blues Noel",for anyone interested, is not available a la carte at Amazon, but it is at iTunes.
Mike Patton, who provides vocals for the album's single, "The Christmas Song", is the lead singer of the rock group Faith No More ("Epic") and has worked with Zorn on several projects in the past.
